7-day Western Caribbean to Isla Tropicale, Belize & Cozumel
Route: Galveston, Roatan, Belize City, Cozumel, Galveston
From $706 (USD)
Belize City cruises from Galveston start with a tender ride to the mainland. Plan a city visit or choose a Maya-site, cave or reef excursion with the return boat in mind.
Fort Street Tourism Village is the landing point for your day ashore. Stay near the city for museums and lunch, or allow for road and boat transfers on a farther outing. Match the activity to your walking or swimming ability and the ship’s tender instructions.

Belize City is a mainland cruise stop where the day ashore starts with a tender ride. Ships anchor offshore, and passenger boats bring you to the Fort Street Tourism Village waterfront. The transfer is part of both ends of your port day.
Follow the ship’s instructions for tender tickets, excursion groups and boarding. An itinerary’s arrival time is not a promise that you will be standing ashore at that moment. For an independently booked tour, tell the operator that you are arriving by cruise tender and agree on a meeting arrangement that accounts for disembarkation.
The tourism village has shops, places to eat and visitor facilities. A tour meeting point might be inside the complex or beyond its exit; get the exact location before leaving. If steps or moving between boats are difficult, discuss the tender arrangements with the cruise line before booking an outing.
A self-guided city visit gives you room to shorten the outing or stop for lunch. The Museum of Belize, housed in a former prison, is one option within walking reach of the cruise waterfront. Its exhibits add context to the Maya sites and the city’s colonial past; confirm admission and opening arrangements for your visit.
Downtown sights include the Haulover Creek waterfront and Swing Bridge area. St. John’s Cathedral and the former Government House, now the House of Culture, extend the historical route farther into the city. Choose a few stops rather than treating every landmark as a compulsory walking circuit.
Plan the walk from the tourism village exit, including the return, and consider heat and your group’s walking tolerance. A guided city tour or an arranged taxi reduces the walking between sights. Agree on the fare, stops, waiting and return destination before the ride; a drive past a museum does not include admission.
Rice and beans with stewed chicken is a Belizean lunch worth looking for during a city visit. The rice and beans are cooked together, often with coconut, and served alongside the chicken. Fry jacks are another local choice, particularly on breakfast menus.
Eating ashore fits naturally into a city day. Returning to the ship for lunch involves tender travel in both directions, so it is a different commitment from stepping back aboard at a dock. Keep a meal stop short enough to leave time for the return boat.
The tourism village is an option for souvenir browsing before heading back. Keep food, purchases and taxi costs separate from any tour price. Ask which currency a quoted amount uses and how payment is accepted rather than assuming an onboard account or package applies ashore.
Altun Ha is a Maya archaeological site north of Belize City, reached by road. Its plazas and temple structures make it a focused ruins outing. Time spent driving is part of the excursion total, so look for the actual site visit as well as the transport.
A Lamanai river-safari excursion adds another stage: a road transfer to the New River, a boat journey and a walk among the ruins before retracing the route. The river ride is part of the attraction. This is a substantial outing to build the day around, with less room for an additional city visit afterward.
For either site, read the walking and step requirements and ask which areas the tour visits. Admission, guiding and meals depend on the booking. A shorter transfer to Altun Ha does not make every version of that excursion suitable for limited mobility.
Cave tubing takes you inland to a river and cave system. Floating is only one part of the activity: the chosen tour can involve a walk over uneven ground, steps and getting into and out of the water. Some packages add ziplining or hanging bridges, which increase the physical demands.
Compare the time on the river with the road transfer and the other activities. Confirm the supplied helmet, flotation equipment and guide arrangements, along with footwear, lockers, lunch and any extra charges. Age, height and health restrictions vary by tour; use the rules for the actual option you are booking.
Reef snorkeling from Belize City requires a boat outing. Some excursions combine snorkeling with a caye visit, including Caye Caulker. Read the itinerary to see how much of the outing is boat travel, time in the water and time on the island.
Check swimming requirements, boarding steps, equipment and supervision. A stop at an island does not automatically include beach facilities or a meal. Conditions affect water activities, and a named reef trip in a catalog is not a guarantee of operation on your sailing.
For a mainland alternative, Old Belize on the George Price Highway has Kukumba Beach, also called Cucumber Beach. It is a paid recreation area with sand and a saltwater swimming pool, reached by road from the cruise waterfront. Arrange the return transport and confirm opening, admission and included facilities; it is a separate outing from a walk around downtown.
An independent caye visit adds a public boat schedule to the tender schedule. Before committing, establish both departures, the return landing and enough time to reach the ship’s tender point. A city visit keeps the independent day on the mainland and avoids that second boat connection.
Choose one main outing for the day, then work backward from the ship’s return instructions. Inland tours and reef trips already involve transfers; combining two large excursions leaves little flexibility for changes in tender access or travel.
A cruise-line excursion and an independent booking can have different meeting arrangements and delay policies. Read the actual terms instead of assuming that the ship waits for every tour. For an independent outing, confirm transport, admission, the return point and what happens if tendering delays your start.
The last tender departure is the key shore-side deadline. Keep it distinct from the ship’s departure time, follow the announced ship time and return to the correct landing point. Budget for boarding as well as the journey back; a universal return buffer would ignore the day’s arrangements.
On a cruise out of Galveston, Texas, Belize City might share an itinerary with Cozumel and Roatan. An inland ruins or cave outing here leaves another port for a beach day. The Western Caribbean guide explains the broader mix of stops.
Harvest Caye is a separate managed island destination in southern Belize, with its own beach, pool and off-island transfers. Its facilities and excursions should not be assumed to apply to Belize City. The Belize cruise guide compares the two stops.
The monthly weather charts and table provide local climate context for choosing a travel month. For the day ashore, use the forecast and the operator’s instructions, especially for river and reef activities.
