Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line, often called NCL, is known for Freestyle Cruising: a flexible approach to dining and time on board. Open-seating restaurants, a relaxed approach to dressing and a choice of entertainment let you shape the day around your interests.

That flexibility works within restaurant hours, reservation arrangements and the facilities of your chosen ship. Compare the included dining and activities first, then consider specialty meals, family programs and adult spaces alongside any benefits bundled with your booking.
What Freestyle Means at Mealtimes
Norwegian Cruise Line's Freestyle approach is easiest to see at dinner. You are not assigned the same dining time and table for the entire cruise. You can choose among the ship's complimentary restaurants or arrange a specialty meal, fitting dinner around the rest of your plans.
The main dining rooms offer served meals, while the buffet provides a more casual option. Some ships also have venues such as The Local or O'Sheehan's for pub-style food. The restaurant lineup differs by ship, so compare the included choices as well as the specialty venues.
Freestyle still involves some planning. Restaurants have operating hours, popular dining times can involve a wait, and specialty meals may need reservations. NCL's relaxed approach to clothing also has dining standards: choose attire suited to the venue and check its current requirements. Dressing up can be part of your evening without becoming the basis of every night's plans.
Separate the Basic Fare from Added Benefits
The basic fare includes your stateroom, meals in complimentary venues, regular onboard entertainment and access to facilities such as the outdoor pools and gym. Included drinks include iced tea, regular coffee, tea, ice water and selected breakfast juices in the buffet.
Specialty dining, alcoholic drinks, sodas, internet, spa services, excursions, arcade games and service charges are separate from that basic offering. Some bookings include selected benefits, so read the terms attached to yours before adding a dining or beverage package. A bundled benefit can have its own limits and charges.
Room service can have a convenience charge, and dining entertainment can be priced separately from regular shows. Check the specific service or event when reserving. Having several restaurants and activities to choose from does not mean every option carries the same inclusion rules.
Build the Day Around Your Own Interests
You can keep a morning simple with breakfast and pool time, join an organized activity or use the fitness facilities. Outdoor recreation areas and larger attractions vary by ship, and some activities carry additional charges. Pick the ship for the features you expect to use instead of treating the whole NCL fleet as one onboard product.
In the evening, choose a stage production, music in a lounge or another activity from the onboard program. Freestyle does not remove performance times or venue capacity, so a little planning helps you combine dinner with a show. Specific productions and entertainment spaces differ by ship.
Adults can spend time in the lounges, choose a specialty dinner or book a spa treatment. Dedicated adult areas, where offered, have their own age and access rules; some require an extra purchase. These choices sit alongside family facilities rather than making Norwegian an adults-only line.
Children, Teens and Parent-Supervised Play
On ships offering the youth programs, Splash Academy serves children ages 3–12 and Entourage is for teens ages 13–17. Regular participation is complimentary. Splash Academy provides supervised activities and play choices, while Entourage gives teens their own social program.
For younger children, Guppies Open Play is a space for parents to play with infants and toddlers. It is not a drop-off nursery. Splash Academy requires children to be fully toilet-trained, and its drop-off services are not available while the ship is docked or anchored.
Review the facilities and operating arrangements for your chosen ship before making childcare plans. Youth programs are not offered on every Norwegian ship, and the clubs do not provide continuous care. Late Night Fun Zone, where available, is a separate fee-based service for children ages 3–12.
Choosing a Norwegian Ship
Start with the included restaurants, entertainment and outdoor spaces that fit your plans. For a family trip, add the youth facilities and care arrangements to that comparison. Then decide which extra-cost experiences you would actually use.
