14-day Eastern Caribbean (Carnival Journeys)
Route: Galveston, Key West, Celebration Key, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, St. Croix, Ocho Rios, Galveston
From $1,405 (USD)
St. Kitts and Nevis cruises from Galveston call at Basseterre on St. Kitts. Follow the former sugar railway, explore Brimstone Hill Fortress or spend the day at South Friars Beach. Find the island outing that fits your trip.
The scenic railway combines train and road travel through the island landscape. A fortress visit puts military history in focus, while a beach outing gives you more time beside the water. The Basseterre call is on St. Kitts; it does not imply a second ship call on Nevis.

The former sugar railway, Brimstone Hill Fortress and South Friars Beach offer three different ways to spend a day on St. Kitts. St. Kitts and Nevis cruises from Galveston reach the island through Basseterre, where you can head into the countryside, visit a historic site or settle beside the water.
Nevis is the other principal island in the country. A Basseterre call is on St. Kitts; the country name does not mean your ship visits both islands. Keep your shore plan centered on St. Kitts unless you book a separate excursion that explicitly visits Nevis.
For arrival, town sights and local access, use the Basseterre port guide. The choices below focus on the wider island and what you would like to do once you leave the capital.
The St. Kitts Scenic Railway follows a line built to carry sugar cane to the mill in Basseterre. Along the northeastern coast, the landscape shifts between villages, farms, bridges and sea views. Old estate chimneys and windmills connect the scenery with the industry that shaped it.
This is a rail-and-road outing. Part of the circuit is aboard the train, with the remaining section traveled by sightseeing bus; the order can reverse. It suits someone who wants to watch the island unfold from a seat rather than make one long visit at a single attraction.
Brimstone Hill can be seen along the wider tour, but seeing the fortress is different from going inside. If exploring it is the reason you want to visit St. Kitts, choose an excursion with an explicit fortress visit instead of assuming the railway trip includes one.
Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park makes history the main event. The UNESCO-listed site brings together stone defenses, barracks and other military structures on a steep volcanic hill. Its position above the coast helps explain why the British chose it for a fortress.
British military engineers designed the defenses, and enslaved Africans built them. That labor belongs at the center of the story, alongside the conflicts and colonial ambitions the fortress served. Walking among the structures gives those accounts a physical setting.
Choose a tour that specifies a stop within the fortress and explains admission. A broad island drive can mention Brimstone Hill without giving you the visit you have in mind. The site's structures occupy different levels, so review the walking involved if you prefer a day with less time on foot.
South Friars Beach, on the Southeast Peninsula, changes the pace after a run of sightseeing days. You can make the shore your main destination, leaving time for a swim, a walk on the sand and a break in a lounge chair rather than moving between landmarks.
At Carambola Beach Club, a beach outing can reserve a lounge chair while leaving umbrella rental and other purchases separate. Decide whether you want a place to sit, shade, lunch or water activities, then compare what the arrangements provide.
A dedicated beach day and a short beach break within an island tour serve different priorities. If you mainly want time beside the sea, look at how much of the outing is actually spent there. Keep the railway or fortress for a different plan instead of expecting every island experience in the same day.
An itinerary that also calls at St. Lucia lets you vary the shore experience. You might follow the sugar railway on St. Kitts and view the Pitons from a boat on St. Lucia, or reserve South Friars for a beach day between more active outings. The combination depends on the itinerary you select.
English is the main language, and the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Most stores and businesses accept U.S. bills too. Clarify whether a quoted dollar price is in EC or U.S. dollars; payment options for an independently booked outing are worth settling with the provider.
