7-day Western Caribbean to Costa Maya, Roatan & Cozumel
Route: Galveston, Costa Maya, Roatan, Cozumel, Galveston
From $408 (USD)
Costa Maya cruises from Galveston call at a mainland port near Mahahual. Choose a waterfront walk, beach outing, Maya-site visit or inland lagoon excursion, with the return to the pier planned.
The cruise complex and Mahahual are separate places. Decide whether to stay near the ship, head to the beachfront or travel inland, then compare transfers, activity time and what your booking includes.

Costa Maya is a docked cruise stop on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, near the town of Mahahual. The pier leads into a purpose-built port complex with shops, dining and attractions. Mahahual’s waterfront is beyond that complex, while Chacchoben and Bacalar require journeys inland.
Allow for the route from the ship through the pier and port area before an outing begins. Follow the arrival instructions for your excursion meeting point or the signed public exit. An independent driver’s pickup can be beyond the port complex; ask for a map or precise directions rather than assuming the vehicle meets you at the gangway.
Staying within the complex keeps the visit close to the ship. You can browse or stop for something to eat without arranging a trip into town. Treat any pool, attraction or reserved seating as a separate facility: establish its access terms before including it in the day. A cruise call does not mean every activity ashore is included.
If the pier route is a concern, ask the cruise line about assistance and the arrangements for your call. Include the walk to the meeting point when discussing an excursion’s accessibility, as well as the vehicle and activity itself.
Mahahual gives a self-directed day a different focus from the cruise complex. Its beachfront malecón has restaurants and beach venues, so you can combine a waterfront walk with lunch or time on the sand. Seafood is one option at the beachside restaurants; choose from the actual menu rather than expecting food to be covered by a beach reservation.
A taxi or booked transfer lets you use your walking time along the waterfront. Give the driver a specific destination in Mahahual and agree on the currency and total fare before leaving. Decide how to arrange the return, including whether a reserved driver waits or comes back at an agreed time.
If you prefer to walk from the port, establish the route from the public exit and count both directions. The pier, complex and approach to town add walking before you reach the malecón. Use your group’s walking tolerance and the day’s conditions to choose between that approach and a ride into town.
For an outing without a day pass, you can make the waterfront walk and a restaurant stop the main plan. Ask about prices and accepted payment before ordering. Beach access, restaurant seating, loungers and other services are separate questions; confirm any minimum spend before settling into a venue’s facilities.
A Mahahual beach outing can be a reserved day pass, a cruise excursion or a visit you arrange after reaching town. Compare the chair or lounger, shade, food, drinks and return transport individually. The words “beach break” do not describe a uniform set of inclusions.
Beach Escape Club illustrates the distinction. Carnival’s Beach Escape with Open Bar description lists beach chairs and a domestic bar, with food available for purchase. Kayaks depend on availability and weather. Those terms belong to that particular excursion; a direct reservation or another beach package can have different benefits and restrictions.
Before booking, find out whether the transfer is included in both directions and how the return works. A flexible return still needs a departure plan that fits the ship’s deadline. Towels, equipment, lockers and extra activities also need checking against the ticket.
A beach venue and a reef snorkeling trip serve different purposes. A boat trip adds boarding and travel to the snorkeling area; a beach visit does not automatically provide equipment or a guide. Read the swimming requirements, water-entry arrangements and supervision details for the activity you choose.
Water conditions affect what an operator can run. For a beach-centered day, ask the venue about the shoreline conditions for your visit, then decide how much of the plan depends on swimming. A waterfront meal or walk gives you something to do if you spend less time in the water.
Chacchoben is an inland Maya archaeological site with temple structures and an Acropolis. A visit adds historical context to the coast, but getting there and back is part of the outing. Compare the time among the ruins with the road travel rather than judging the excursion by its total length.
Plan for walking through the site and read the chosen tour’s terrain and step requirements. Vehicle transport to the entrance does not remove the walking portion. A guided visit can explain the buildings you see; an independently arranged drive needs separate decisions about admission and guiding.
Some excursions combine Chacchoben with a beach stop. Decide whether you want the ruins visit itself or that larger combination, then look at the time allocated to each. A snack or bar inclusion at the beach is different from a full meal, and a chair does not establish that water activities are included.
Confirm the site’s opening and entry arrangements for your visit. For an independent booking, get the pickup point, road transfer, entry charges, guide and return destination in writing. Allow the day to revolve around this outing instead of adding another distant attraction afterward.
Bacalar’s Lagoon of Seven Colors is an inland alternative to Mahahual’s Caribbean shoreline. Boat or kayaking outings make the lagoon the reason for the trip. This involves road travel away from Costa Maya, so treat it as a main excursion rather than an extra stop after a beach morning.
Look for the actual activity in the booking: time aboard a boat, time paddling or access to a waterfront venue. These are different ways to use the lagoon and have different boarding and physical requirements. A lagoon-view lunch is not the same purchase as a guided water outing.
Separate the transfer from the activity time, and establish whether meals, equipment and entry are included. For a private trip, agree on the full return plan before leaving the port. Staying in Mahahual is the coastal alternative when you prefer a day without that inland journey.
Work backward from the ship’s announced all-aboard deadline. Returning to Costa Maya’s gate still leaves the route through the complex and along the pier. Use the ship’s time instructions rather than assuming a phone or a local clock matches them.
For an independent outing, save the operator’s contact details and confirm where the return vehicle drops you. Read the delay and cancellation terms; an operator’s return promise does not establish that the cruise line will hold the ship. A missed port call also needs its own booking terms.
Check what requires payment ashore before setting out, including transport, meals and any entry extras. Establish the quoted currency and payment method with each provider. Keep the ship’s onboard account separate from those arrangements unless the specific booking says otherwise.
Costa Maya and Cozumel give a cruise out of Galveston, Texas, two different settings for a day ashore. A Chacchoben outing here can leave Cozumel for reef snorkeling or an island beach venue. If you choose Mahahual instead, you can use the other stop for a different activity. The Mexico cruise guide compares the island and mainland calls.
The Western Caribbean guide puts those choices into the wider route. Open the full itinerary before reserving a substantial inland trip so that you can plan the other port days around it.
