A Disney island day without a town transfer
Disney Castaway Cay is a private island in The Bahamas reserved for Disney Cruise Line guests. The shore day centers on its beaches, lagoon, trails and activities. You arrive at the destination itself, rather than using a city port as the starting point for another transfer.
When the ship docks, you walk ashore onto the island. You can spend the day independently in the included beach areas without booking a Port Adventure. A paid activity adds a particular experience; it is not an admission ticket needed for the basic island visit.
The Bahamas itinerary guide puts that island day alongside other types of calls. For Castaway Cay cruises from Galveston, use the cruise schedule to check the full route, then choose how you want to spend this visit rather than assuming a particular activity comes with the sailing.
Choose your beach before boarding the tram
You can walk along the island’s paved paths or use its tram service to reach the beach areas. The family beach stops and the onward connection toward Serenity Bay serve different parts of the island. Knowing which area you want helps you avoid an unnecessary ride or a long walk carrying beach bags.
Serenity Bay is farther from the ship than the family beach areas. If you are using the tram, include the connection and the walk from the stop in your plan. For the return, allow for waiting and boarding as well as the final walk back to the gangway.
Disney says the trams can accommodate personal and electric wheelchairs, but not sand wheelchairs. Contact Special Services before sailing about the full route and any assistance you need. Beach access across sand is a separate consideration from traveling on paved paths or boarding a tram; equipment availability does not guarantee that every activity suits every traveler.
Family Beach, Serenity Bay and children’s activities
Keep the family day around Family Beach
Castaway Family Beach puts swimming, beach seating and nearby island activities in the same part of the day. Pelican Plunge is a water-play platform with slides, not a pool beside your chair. Consider the swim to the platform and the participation rules before making it the main attraction for a child.
Scuttle’s Cove provides supervised children’s activities; Teen Hideout is a separate youth area. Ask about the current eligibility and check-in arrangements, and use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for the day’s program. A beach visit does not require joining a club or planning around every character appearance.
Serenity Bay is the adult beach choice
Serenity Bay is reserved for guests eighteen and older. Choose it when your group wants an adult beach setting, then plan lunch and the return around that location. A family cabana booking or a child’s participation in a supervised activity does not change the beach’s age rule.
If your party is splitting between zones, agree on where and when to meet. Separate beach choices can work well, but they add coordination to a day that otherwise needs little transport planning.
Lunch and beach basics are included; rentals are separate
Your cruise fare includes beach access, lounge chairs, umbrellas and towels, along with the island’s BBQ lunch and complimentary drink stations and soft-serve ice cream. Those inclusions make a beach-and-lunch day possible without reserving an extra package.
Snorkel gear, floats, bikes and other water equipment are separate rentals. Cabanas, specialty drinks, shopping and Port Adventures also add to the bill. A beverage sold at a bar or specialty counter is different from the included drink stations; read the terms of any package you plan to use ashore.
Check the lunch locations and serving times in the day’s information before heading to another beach or starting an activity. Included lunch does not mean every food counter serves throughout the call. If your group has dietary needs, discuss them with Disney before sailing and with the dining team for the island visit.
A cabana changes your beach base, not the entire cost structure of the island. Read its own booking details for the location, guest allowance, equipment and services covered. The included beach day remains the alternative if you do not want a reserved private space.
The snorkel lagoon is a shore-based outing
The snorkel lagoon lets you explore from Castaway Cay’s beach area rather than taking a boat to another site. Disney’s lagoon rental offers equipment for a self-directed visit, with underwater features to look for. Plan it as swimming time, not simply a rental pickup beside the beach.
Disney lists this as an active to moderate activity. Comfort swimming with a mask and fins matters, particularly if you want to explore beyond the entry area. Ask staff about the designated route, required vest and current conditions, and choose how far to go according to your ability.
Check what your rental or bundled package supplies and where to collect it. The lagoon rental and a guided reef excursion are separate choices with different arrangements. If snorkeling is not right for your group, beach time, a walk or the island’s land-based activities can fill the visit without adding a water excursion.
A bike ride and a boat excursion use time differently
Cycle on the island
A bicycle rental gives you an active break from the beach on Castaway Cay’s paths. Collection, riding and returning the bike all fit within the rental period. Check the bike sizes, equipment and route guidance for your group; a rental listed for families does not establish that every rider will be comfortable with the same distance.
Walking a shorter route is the alternative when you want some island scenery without renting a bike. Neither choice requires treating the entire island as a sightseeing circuit before you settle at the beach.
Travel by boat to a reef site
The Castaway Snorkel By Boat Adventure takes participants away from the island to coral reefs. Disney classifies it as athletic. Boarding, the journey to the site and the return take part of the advertised outing, so compare the time available in the water with the total excursion time.
Before reserving, establish the boat’s boarding and water-entry arrangements, swimming expectations, age rules and equipment inclusions. A reef outing asks more of you than sitting aboard for the ride. The shore-based lagoon is a different snorkeling option; staying at the beach avoids the boat journey entirely.
Use the activity offered for your actual call. Excursions and water activities depend on availability and conditions, and an item in Disney’s catalog is not a promise that it will operate on every sailing.
Leave room for the journey back from your beach
Before your final swim or activity, note the ship’s all-aboard time and the route back from your chosen area. Returning from Serenity Bay may involve a tram connection; a rental needs to be handed back before you head toward the ship. Finish those stages before the deadline rather than treating departure from the beach as arrival at the gangway.
Follow the ship’s instructions for the credentials you need to carry ashore and present when reboarding. The island visit is managed by Disney, but you still need to return on time. Keep bags and purchases manageable for the walk and tram ride.
If your cruise out of Galveston, Texas, also visits Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, plan the two days separately. Castaway Cay has its own island layout; Lookout Cay’s arrival includes a pier journey before the main-area tram. Likewise, a Nassau city visit offers a different history-and-food outing from this private island beach day.
