Cruising to Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel tourist information.

Cozumel, MexicoCozumel, Mexican island  in the Caribbean Sea at tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, is regular port of call on Western Caribbean itineraries, particularly those leaving from Galvestont Texas port, famed for its scuba diving. Plaza Central, or just “El Centro,” is the heart of San Miguel, directly across from the ferry docks that serve Playa del Carmen. Residents congregate here in the evening, especially on weekends, when free concerts begin at 8 pm. Heading inland (east) takes you away from the tourist zone and toward residential areas of town. Most of the island’s restaurants, hotels, stores, and dive shops are concentrated downtown and along the two hotel zones that fan out on the leeward coast to the north and south of San Miguel. Cozumel’s solitude-seeking windward side has a few beach-bar restaurants, one hotel, and miles of deserted beaches.

Scuba diving and snorkeling in Cozumel

At Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, there’s diving spots around a section of the Mesoamerican Reef and the Museo Subacuático de Arte’s submerged sculptures. Chankanaab is an eco park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees and sea turtles.

Isla Cozumel Mexico is very famous for its diving and snorkeling because of the magnificent coral reefs that are only a short distance from the shore. Drift diving was pretty much created in Cozumel, because of the perfect current that flows along the island, which allows divers to use very little energy to enjoy the famous reefs in Cozumel. The current that flows along the island also helps keep the corals healthy and clean, and adds to the crystal clear visibility Cozumel is famous for.
